The B.C. government has allocated funding to rebuild Amy Woodland Elementary School after it was damaged by a fire last year.
On June 30, 2024, firefighters took down a fire that police believed to be arson in the gymnasium roof.
While the building remained standing, the flames caused significant structural damage in the gymnasium and smoke damage throughout the school.
The building has been closed since the fire and students had to be relocated to other schools across Cranbrook while the Southeast Kootenay School District (SD5) looked into it’s options for the property.
However, SD5 secured some provincial funding to replace the damaged school.
“The Ministry has recognized the importance of continuing this legacy by providing funding for a new school building,” said SD5 officials.
“With this support, the school district looks forward to continuing working closely with the Ministry of Education and Child Care and the Ministry of Infrastructure and other partners to create a modern, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment that benefits all Amy Woodland students for years to come.”
While the exact funding amount has not been announced yet, the Province has pledged its support.
“Students, staff, families, and community members in Cranbrook were devastated by the fire at Amy Woodland Elementary School and the disruption it caused,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister for Infrastructure.
“I am pleased to confirm that there is funding in Budget 2025 for the replacement of Amy Woodland Elementary and we are working with the school district on the next steps.”
