Cranbrook approves price hike for water turn-offs

Cranbrook council has approved raising the fee for water turn-on and turn-offs from $15 to $140.

Currently, residents are not charged a water turn-off fee during regular working hours.

If water turn-offs are completed after hours, the resident is charged for the actual cost of the work.

Fees for turn-offs haven’t been touched since 1986.

Councilor Norma Blissett says they need to be looking at this stuff more frequently.

“What I would like to suggest is that as a management policy we review fees and charges every five years,” she said.

“This was left way too long and we need to have procedures where it’s coming up on the to-do list regularly so this 39 year gap doesn’t happen again.”

The city expecting roughly $18,000 in increased revenue with the fee hike.

City staff say it will take effect on Sept. 1 to give residents and contractors the opportunity to plan and budget the cost into any new construction projects.
