Fernie council approves contract for dike project

Fernie city council has approved a contract worth $1.2 million for the Mountview Dike Phase 2 and Coal Creek Bin Wall rehabilitation project.

Vitae Environmental Construction Ltd. was awarded the $1,231,461.50 contract.

The project will involve raising the Mountainview Dike by 500 metres to the flood correction level.

Crews will also be armouring 350 metres of the the dike at the confluence of the Elk River and Coal Creek and doing repair work to the bin wall.

Coal Creek will be temporarily rerouted to the other side of the creek bed during construction.

The city was planning to have construction begin last summer and fall but it was delayed due to the complexity of the permitting process.

It’s now scheduled for the summer of 2025.

The project is being funded by a UBCM grant worth $1.98 million.
