Cranbrook raises dam replacement budget ahead of borrowing

The City of Cranbrook has upped the Gold Creek Dam reconstruction budget to $15 million.

The budget is being increased from $14 million to facilitate independent third party engineering review of the dam design.

Dam safety officers reviewed the design and found a couple of items will need to be added to the project.

That includes a log boom for debris catchment and additional monitoring wells and monitoring equipment.

City council has given three readings to a loan authorization bylaw to borrow $10 million for the project.

The city recently received a $5 million grant from the province.

The current dam has experienced significant structural stress and is beyond its useful life.

The city is expecting contractor procurement in late summer or early fall with construction to begin in late 2025 or early 2026.
