Cranbrook to update water turn-off fees

The City of Cranbrook is increasing another user fee in the community, this time focusing on water turn-off fees.

Residents and businesses are charged for any emergency and nonemergency turn-offs.

The fees have not been updated since 1986 and are currently $15 for the first time and $25 per other occurrence.

That will be changed to $140 for any occurrence.

Upping user fees will help somewhat when it comes to the budget and tax increases.

Councillor Norma Blissett says staff need to be looking at all user fees to make sure they are getting updated.

“I would hope that staff are reviewing all of our fees because we’ve had this with parking and the cemetery,” she said.

“I would say things should be updated every five years. From 1986 to 2025 is too big a gap. It should be a part of administration practice.”

Once adopted it’s expected to take effect on Sept. 1, 2025.
