To chlorinate or not to chlorinate in Canal Flats

A Canal Flats committee is looking at possible disinfectant solutions after changes to Interior Health’s contamination threshold.

Canal Flats Mayor Mark Doherty says the community doesn’t meet the new threshold.

“Interior Health decided we needed to disinfect our water. We don’t agree with it as a community,” he said.

“We don’t meet the criteria that they’ve put forth. They’ve lowered their threshold and we’re close to the threshold now.”

He says they encouraged citizens to start the water protection and conservation advisory committee to look at disinfection options.

He adds that they are not in favour of using chlorine.

“We asked the community to put together a committee which they did and they’ve been investigating ways that we could disinfect without using chlorine,” he said.

Whatever options the committee may find, Doherty says the province should be the one on the hook for the bill.

“We’re a small community and it’s Interior Health and the province who are implementing this so we feel they should be helping us with putting it in place.”

The committee will be holding an information session next month for residents to give their thoughts and ask questions.

It takes place on March 17 at 6 p.m. in the Canal Flats Civic Center.
