Elk Valley RCMP warn public to be cautious of spiked drinks

Elk Valley RCMP is warning the public to be aware of their personal safety when consuming alcohol with a number of reports on social media of people’s drinks allegedly being spiked with drugs such as Ketamine or GHB while drinking at local establishments.

Police say they have received at least four reports of suspected drink spiking in Fernie throughout December and January.

“These substances can be very dangerous, particularly when combined with alcohol, as they can cause sedation, memory loss, and even unconsciousness,” said Sgt. Brad Gregory, Elk Valley RCMP spokesperson.

“We encourage everyone to take steps to protect themselves and their friends, such as watching their drinks closely, never accepting drinks from strangers, and sticking together in social settings.”

So far, none of the reported cases have been confirmed through blood or other laboratory analysis and RCMP say two files remain open for investigation.

Police urge the public to report any suspicions or incidents as it could aid in the RCMP investigation.

Any information can be reported to the Elk Valley detachments at 250-425-6233 in Sparwood or 250-423-4404 in Fernie.
