StellerVista Credit Union donates over $25,000 to local food banks

StellerVista Credit Union is closing out 2024 with a donation of over $25,000 to food banks across seven communities in the Kootenays.

The largest donations will go to communities in the East Kootenay.

“$5,000 will go to Cranbrook, another $5,000 will go to Fernie and $3,500 each will go to Sparwood and Elkford,” said Jeff Fero, Director of Marketing and Community Engagement.

This comes as StellerVista Credit Union closes out its biggest donation year, giving out over $200,000 to local organizations and initiatives across its service area.

“We try to keep our profits in the community,” said Fero.

“The more people who bank locally, the more funds and opportunity we have to contribute to giving back. Banking locally can help make the community better in a way.”

Credit union Board Chair, Lynnette Wray says the donations can make a big difference for non-profit groups.

“Our donations are not just about funding — they are about showing up for the people doing critical work on the ground. Supporting local people and business isn’t just part of our strategy — it’s who we are,” said Wray.

In addition to its donation, the credit union says it has given over $480,000 in dividends and rewards to its members.

“We return this money to our members and communities as a thank you for their trust and their business,” said CEO Jody Burk.

“The more we do together, the bigger impact we can have. That’s the power of cooperation and community-focused banking.”
