Fuel reduction work to go ahead in Cranbrook Community Forest

Fuel reduction work will get underway in Cranbrook Community Forest in the New Year, as the Provincial Wildfire Risk Reduction Program commences the project using hand treatment techniques.

“Crews will be working in and around the College Way Recreation Trail starting as early as January and working into May of 2025,” said the Regional District of East Kootenay.

“The public is asked to please respect the crew’s signage and active work areas.”

This project is part of an ongoing effort to create a fuel break in the Community Forest.

Workers will remove accumulations of surface fuels and widen the spacing between trees by removing smaller stems and potentially dangerous trees.

“This material will be piled in piles no larger than 2 metres tall and 3 metres wide, in locations that will not add an increased fire risk,” explained the RDEK.

The piles will later be burned when conditions allow.
