Cranbrook council approves new cemetery bylaw, fees to increase

Cranbrook city council has approved the new cemetery bylaw which will guide the future development, operation, care and maintenance of Westlawn Cemetery.

Part of the new bylaw will be to up all cemetery fees so the cemetery is not being run at a loss.

“We should be breaking even and we should also be looking at what other towns are doing as far as the difference in cost for residents who are paying municipal taxes compared to those who aren’t,” said Councillor Norma Blissett.

The cemetery had an average net loss of $82,500 from 2018-2022.

Fees will be increased by 20 per cent to bring the city in line with other communities and starting in 2026 there will be a yearly increase in line with inflation.

The full cemetery bylaw can be found here.
