Wildsight launches campaign to bolster Elk Valley food security

Wildsight Elk Valley has renewed its Feed the Need campaign aimed at bolstering food security in the region through a monthly donation program.

Food Banks BC officials say food bank visits have increased by 81 per cent since 2019 and 31 per cent of all food bank users are children. Wildsight want to help make a difference through their local campaign.

“The response from families has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s truly wonderful to offer support that is both low-barrier and practical, helping families access fresh, locally sourced food while easing financial stress,” said Layne Leskosek, Outreach and SAS Coordinator for the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre.

“Feed the Need is making a real difference in our community. The joy and relief we see in participants when they pick up their cards – this program is about more than food—it’s about supporting dignity, well-being, and community resilience.”

Wildsight says Feed the Need donations will benefit two initiatives:

  • Local Store gift cards – With the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre, Local will provide gift cards to community members who need food assistance.
  • Evergreens Farm donations to the food bank – Feed the Need donations will contribute to the operations of Evergreens Farm, which will perpetuate monthly donations of fresh produce to the food bank.

“This initiative uniquely strengthens the local food system by increasing access for those in need while empowering local food producers to share their harvest,” said Wildsight officials.

“It fosters sustainability, supports local agriculture, and ensures fresh, nutritious food is available to the community year-round.”

Wildisight launched Feed the Need in December 2023, and has raised $7,200 in the first year.

“We’re excited to take our monthly subscription program in a new direction to make a meaningful difference for those experiencing food insecurity,” said Sami Bierman, Wildsight Elk Valley’s Branch Administrator.

“By supporting Feed the Need, community members will directly help to expand food access and sustain our local food network.”
