Highway 93 traffic impacted by habitat restoration work

A no-stopping zone is in place along Highway 93 South through Kootenay National Park with habitat restoration work underway at Olive Lake.

The no-stopping zone is in place as Parks Canada officials conduct habitat restoration work at Olive Lake to support Westslope cutthroat trout.

This comes as a field team is treating the lake with rotenone – a fish toxicant derived from plants – to remove non-native fish species.

The no-stopping zone will be in place until Saturday, Oct 12 and runs from the Kindersley trailhead up to and including Cobb Lake trailhead.

An area closure is also in effect until Oct. 14 and includes day-use areas and trails around Olive Lake.

The closure will tie into Olive Lake’s annual seasonal closure, which runs from mid-October to early May.

We will have a follow-up story with Parks Canada describing what this habitat restoration work entails and why it is important once the job is wrapped up.
