Baker Park development zoning change passes third reading

Cranbrook City council gave third reading to a proposed zoning bylaw amendment to allow additional housing density in the Baker Park development zone.

The city brought the amendment forward as a way of facilitating development on an underutilized parcel of the land.

Once approved it will allow mixed-use medium-density dwellings and a portion of the land will likely be a new middle-income apartment building with a maximum density of 36 units.

That apartment is expected to be a joint partnership between the city and the province’s BC Builds program.

BC Builds helps speed up the development of projects and offers grant funding for municipalities.

Community planner Santana Patten says the land is in a great location.

“The location of the site is right downtown and within less than 500 metres of the transit terminal,” she said.

“It’s in walking distance to downtown amenities for working individuals.”

The development area is not within the park and won’t impact the campground.

The amendment is subject to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure approval before council will have its final say.
