Community prosperity grants given to four East Kootenay non-profits

The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR) has distributed $265,000 to four local projects through the Government of British Columbia’s Community Prosperity Fund.

The projects receiving funding will benefit residents in the Elk Valley, Cranbrook, and the surrounding area and include the following:

  • Elk Valley Family Society – $40,000
    • The Elk Valley Family Society will use the funding to increase its capacity and digital upgrades to support affordable and social housing in Fernie, Sparwood, and RDEK Areas A and B.
  • Kootenay Employment Services Society – $56,000
    • Kootenay Employment Services Society’s grant will be used to focus on the recruitment and retention of immigrants to address labour shortages.
  • Community Connections Society of Southeast BC – $69,000
    • The Community Connections Society is using its funding to support staffing within the Cranbrook Food Recovery project.
  • ANKORS – $100,000
    • ANKORS’ grant will be used to hire staff with lived experience to support Cranbrook residents experiencing homelessness, addictions, and mental health.

“CFKR is honoured to be one of more than 50 local community foundations from across BC that are participating in the Government of B.C.’s Community Prosperity Fund,” said Lynnette Wray, CFKR Executive Director.

The grants come from the B.C. government’s $25 million Community Prosperity Fund with the goal of reducing poverty and improving social inclusion.

Grant recipients can have their funding dolled out over time, up to three years, to support operational expenses or project delivery.

“We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to support these important non-profit projects in our communities. We share our heartfelt thanks with all the applicants,” said Wray.
