Area restrictions lifted around Ravenshead wildfire

Area restrictions around the Ravenshead wildfire have been lifted as firefighters continue to battle the flames.

The fire, about 20 km east of Invermere, has grown to 8,615 hectares since it was discovered on July 24.

It is now classified as ‘being held,’ meaning that it is unlikely to grow any larger, but crews are still fighting the fire.

BC Wildfire Service officials said the fire behaviour has decreased in recent days due to the ongoing cool wet weather and continuing efforts from firefighters.

That said, travelling through the area can still pose safety risks.

“Fire-damaged trees may be unstable and could fall down. Ash pits can be hard to detect and can remain hot long after the flames have died down,” said the BCWS.

“Even if an area restriction has been rescinded, officials still have the authority under the Wildfire Act and its regulations to order anyone to leave the area.”

You will still be able to see smoke coming from the fire for a few more weeks, which the BCWS said is normal if it is within the fire perimeter.

Any smoke spotted outside of that area can be reported to 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
