Whiteswan Lake area ordered to evacuate as Mt. Morro fire grows

An evacuation order has been enacted in the Whiteswan Lake area as the Mount Morro wildfire expands north.

The Regional District of East Kootenay said the order is in place for four properties, the Home Basin Campground and Inlet Creek Campground.

“Emergency Services personnel are in the process of doing in-person notification to the affected properties,” said Information Officer Loree Duczek.

The BC Wildfire Service has also amended the area restrictions around the fire to include the Lussier Hot Springs, Alces Lake, and Whiteswan Provincial Park.

“As these are popular recreational spots, we want the public to be aware of this important amendment to the Area Restriction,” said Duczek.

The fire has grown to 11,382 hectares since it was first discovered on July 17.

The BC Wildfire Service believes the fire to be caused by lightning.
