Two more FireSmart events are scheduled for later this month to help residents make their properties more resilient to fires.
B.C.’s Minister of Forests, Bruce Ralston, said these events are a good way to raise awareness.
“It’s a call to mobilize not just government, not just some agencies, but to raise general public awareness about the importance of this issue,” he said.
“Communities need to take steps and be funded to cut away and make the surrounding community less available to fires by taking away the underbrush, small trees and debris.”
An information session and work event is set for June 22 for Chief David Road residents starting at 9:30 a.m.
Volunteers and neighbours will be working together to remove old, downed barbwire fencing, to create safer access to forested land for BC Wildfire Service.
On June 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m, at the Lion’s Den a Fairmont neighbourhood champion workshop will be underway.
The workshop will be for volunteers looking to become Neighbourhood champions.
Their role is to spread awareness and lead fire mitigation efforts.
