Edgewater structure fire contained to basement

Nobody was hurt when a fire broke out in a building’s basement, which was quickly contained by Edgewater firefighters.

Officials with the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) said the fire started overnight on Wednesday at a building in the 5700 block of Vermillion Street.

“When we arrived, it was determined the fire originated in the basement,” said Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Duty Chief Joss Advocaat. “Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of the firefighters, they were able to confine the fire to the basement and save the structure.”

RDEK officials said eight firefighters from Edgewater had backup from five firefighters and an engine from Radium Hot Springs another engine and four more firefighters from Windermere.

Emergency Social Services was able to provide the homeowner with accommodations after the fire.

“The crews from all three departments did an excellent job working together on this call, and ensuring the fire didn’t spread,” said Advocaat.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
