Ground has been broken on Komatsu Mining’s new facility in Sparwood.
Mayor David Wilks said Thursday’s announcement “shows Komatsu’s commitment to the District itself, as well as to the mining community as a whole.”
The $40 million dollar facility will be a centrepiece in the new Middletown Place development along Highway 3 which will attract other business to Sparwood.

“We’re very happy that they have set up roots in Sparwood to service all of western Canada and hopefully beyond that,” added Wilks. “This building that Komatsu is putting forward is a centre of excellence, so they plan on using techniques that may not even be looked at yet.”
Wilks said Komatsu’s new facility will demonstrate that they are “here to stay for generations to come.”
Although Wilks doesn’t know the exact number of jobs Komatsu Mining could bring to Sparwood, he is looking forward to a rise in employment, and welcoming new residents to the community.
The company plans to operate out its leased facility in Sparwood until construction of the new 85,000 square-foot sales and service facility is completed at the end of 2020.
