Free transit offered in Kootenays on provincial election day

Kootenay residents will be able to ride BC Transit for free on Saturday, Oct. 24, as voters head to the polls for the provincial election.

BC Transit has confirmed fare-free service in participating communities across the province, including the West Kootenay, Cranbrook and Revelstoke.

The initiative aims to make transportation more accessible on election day, with participating local governments responsible for deciding whether to waive fares.

Free transit will also extend to handyDART services in applicable regions.

While more than 30 communities and transit service areas across B.C. are participating, some interregional routes are excluded from the offer.

Advance voting in the provincial election runs from Oct. 16 to 21, with general voting day set for Saturday, Oct. 24.

Residents are encouraged to check local routes and schedules before travelling.
