Cranbrook RCMP Const. Mike Murray is preparing to take on the 2026 Cops for Kids Annual Ride.
Murray is one of the local riders taking part in the 10-day cycling event, which runs Sept. 11 to 20 and raises money for children and families across southeastern B.C.
He recently spoke at a Rotary Club of Cranbrook luncheon about the importance of the organization and the support it provides.
“I think it’s important to bring awareness to Cops For Kids and to tell the people in the community if you need help with your children, it might be hotels or medical appointments or therapy.”
Murray, who has been with the RCMP for 16 years, has been training for the challenging terrain riders will face along the route, including steep sections around Castlegar.
“I’ve been practicing my downhill a little bit because you’re going 60 kilometers an hour, 70 kilometer an hour, and I gotta get used to that on my bike.”
The ride begins and ends in Kelowna, with participants travelling through communities across southeastern B.C.
Murray said Cops for Kids has averaged about $400,000 in fundraising each year.
“We’ve averaged around $400,000 a year and all the funds raised go towards the families that are in need,” he said.
“My goal is around $10,000 to raise this year. “
Local fundraising efforts include the Jail and Bail event in Cranbrook, while donations can also be made through copsforkids.org.
