High risk incident resolved after large police presence at airport

Cranbrook RCMP said a high-risk incident near Canadian Rockies International Airport ended peacefully Monday after officers responded to a report of a person in distress.

Police said the incident prompted road closures and a large police presence as officers worked to maintain public safety.

The response included officers from Kimberley RCMP, along with the Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Police Dog Services, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems and Critical Incident Command personnel.

Cranbrook RCMP media relations officer Const. Carlee Munro said public safety was the priority.

“This incident demonstrates the value of specialized policing resources and the strong collaboration between local officers and support units,” said Cst. Munro. “Our primary objective was to ensure the safety of the public, our officers, and the individual in crisis. Thanks to the professionalism and coordinated efforts of everyone involved, the situation was resolved peacefully.”

RCMP also thanked the public for its patience and co-operation during the response.
