Fernie neighbourhood undergoing pedestrian upgrades

Work is underway in the Mountview neighbourhood to improve pedestrian safety at two intersections, according to the City of Fernie.

The city said marked crosswalks with curb extensions are being installed at the intersections of Mt Trinity Avenue and Mt Ingram Street and Mt Trinity Avenue and Mt Klauer Street.

According to the city, the improvements are intended to shorten crossing distances, reduce pedestrians’ exposure to traffic, improve visibility between pedestrians and motorists and reduce the speed of vehicles turning right.

The city said the work is expected to take about three weeks, with curbing, asphalt and other site work phased in over that period.

Mt Trinity Avenue will be open to local traffic only between Mt Ingram Street and Mt Klauer Street during construction, the city said.

Construction signs will be in place around the work areas.

The city said the work will complete a series of three traffic improvement projects planned for 2026.
