Site work has begun on a major upgrade to Invermere’s Mt. Nelson pump track.
The District of Invermere, Columbia Valley Cycling Society, Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 and Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance are working together on the Mt. Nelson Pump Track Revitalization Project, which will replace the existing dirt track with a permanent asphalt track.
The new track is intended for riders of all ages and skill levels, including cyclists, skateboarders, scooter riders, inline skaters and adaptive riders.
Velosolutions will design and build the track. The company has also built pump tracks in Kimberley and Revelstoke.
The facility will have two track options: a smaller route for beginners and a longer, more advanced route for experienced riders. Project organizers said the layout will accommodate more riders and improve flow during busy periods.
The asphalt track is expected to be smoother, more durable and easier to maintain than the existing dirt track. It will also include Velosolutions Vorld technology, which allows riders to record and compare lap times.
Site preparation began Monday, Aug. 17, with construction scheduled to begin in September. The project is expected to take about six weeks, with completion planned for early October.
The project is expected to cost about $620,000. Organizers said more than $510,000 has been raised, with just over $103,000 still needed.
Funding includes $330,000 from Columbia Basin Trust and $150,000 through the Resort Municipality Initiative for Invermere and Panorama.
Community fundraising is continuing. Organizers said donations made through the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance are eligible for charitable tax receipts.
Project organizers said the completed track is expected to support school programs, community events, coaching clinics and competitions and help attract riders and visitors to the Columbia Valley.
