Edgewater Fire Department responds to new fire Thursday morning

A new fire just outside Edgewater was quickly brought under control Thursday morning by members of the Edgewater Fire Department.

Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Chief Drew Sinclair said the fire was reported shortly after 7 a.m. following a series of lightning strikes overnight.

“Following last night’s lightning, a new start was called in just east of the Highway at approximately 7:15am this morning. Our team responded immediately and when we arrived on scene, found the fire was confined to a relatively small area. They’ve done an excellent job of getting it quickly extinguished,” said Sinclair.

The Edgewater Fire Department responded with three fire apparatus and seven firefighters. The firefighters remained at the scene Thursday morning conducting final mop-up and checking for hot spots.

Regional District of East Kootenay officials said that although the storm brought rainfall, conditions in the region remained dry and additional fires could start as warm, dry weather returns over the next few days.
