Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for southern East Kootenay

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the southern East Kootenay, including Cranbrook.

Conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain, according to the weather agency.

Driving conditions may be difficult.

There is also potential for storm cells to move through the East Kootenay over the next 24 to 36 hours, according to the regional update.

Environment Canada advises people to head indoors when they hear thunder, noting lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

Residents can monitor the latest alerts and forecasts on the Environment and Climate Change Canada weather website.
