Elk Valley Resources (EVR) is donating $100,000 to Fernie Search and Rescue (FSAR) to help replace its specialized helicopter rescue system, a critical tool used to respond quickly to rescues in difficult terrain across the region.
The current Class D Fixed Line (CDFL) helicopter rescue system has been in use since 2017 and has been used in more than 100 rescue missions across the East Kootenay.

The system helps reduce rescue times in difficult terrain by allowing rescuers to be transported on a fixed line beneath a helicopter. It enables trained rescuers to reach people in areas where helicopters cannot land safely, including steep slopes, avalanche terrain, dense forests and moving water.
The replacement is expected to help FSAR continue carrying out faster and safer rescues in remote and difficult terrain for years to come.
“This investment from EVR will ensure our team can continue providing a specialized rescue capability that has proven invaluable across the region. Our current CDFL system has played a key role in helping save numerous lives. Replacing this equipment will allow our volunteers to continue delivering fast, effective rescue services in remote and technical terrain for years to come.” said Simon Piney, Head of Fernie Search and Rescue.
FSAR is one of a small number of search-and-rescue groups in B.C. with access to the equipment and the ability to provide the specialized rescue service.
EVR CEO Mike Carrucan said the organization supports communities throughout the region, including Fernie, Elkford, Sparwood, Cranbrook and Kimberley.
“The volunteers of Fernie Search and Rescue provide an essential service that helps keep people safe across the Elk Valley and beyond,” said Carrucan.
FSAR responds to about 50 incidents each year, making it the busiest search and rescue group in the East Kootenay, and without the CDFL system, many rescues would not be able to be completed efficiently. Without the system, rescues in difficult terrain would require lengthy ground extractions, increasing the risk for both rescuers and those who need rescuing.
Carrucan said FSAR is made up of all volunteers, who spend countless hours training and responding to emergencies throughout the year.
“Many of our employees serve as volunteer rescuers and contribute their expertise through the organization’s mountain rescue and helicopter longline programs. We’re proud to support the replacement of this vital rescue system, helping ensure these highly skilled volunteers have the tools they need to respond quickly and safely when lives are on the line.” said Carrucan.
Simon Piney, Head of Fernie Search and Rescue said the donation from EVR’s shows their ongoing commitment to helping make the Elk Valley a safer place through supporting emergency response and community safety.
“We are incredibly grateful for EVR’s support and commitment to community safety,” said Piney.
