Fernie reminds public to use caution on waterways after reports of log jams

The City of Fernie is reminding the public to use caution on waterways after receiving reports of dangerous log jams on the Elk River near Fernie.

The city is providing safety tips for people recreating on waterways or planning to spend time on the Elk River over the long weekend.

  • Always wear a life-jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) while boating, fishing or paddling.
  • Supervise children closely and keep them within reach near moving water.
  • Avoid swimming in fast-flowing rivers because of hidden hazards such as undercurrents and changing depths.
  • Never use ankle leashes when paddleboarding in moving water because logs or rocks can catch the leash and trap you underwater.
  • Do not consume alcohol, drugs or anything else that may impair judgment, balance or coordination before participating in water activities.
  • Always travel with a companion and never venture onto a river alone.
  • Bring a paddle and use a steerable watercraft to help avoid hazards.
  • Always tell someone your plans, including your entry point, exit point and expected return time.
  • Know your route and stay in manageable, well-known sections of the river.
  • If equipment such as tubes, boards or other watercraft is lost, report it to authorities so unnecessary search efforts are not initiated.

City officials urged the public to take appropriate safety precautions while enjoying the Elk River or any other waterway.
