Chemical treatments of Invasive plants will soon begin in the Village of Radium Hot Springs
Beginning in August, Radium Hot Springs will be starting chemical treatments for invasive plants within the municipality’s boundaries.
The treatments are based on the Invasive Plant Management Plan the village developed last year, and will be completed by a qualified contractor.
The chemical treatments will begin August 4, and are expected to take up to two weeks, with the possibility of finishing earlier if weather permits.
The contractor will put up signs at key points and try to avoid busy areas at busy times.
An invasive plant is defined by the Invasive Species Council of British Columbia as a plant that does not occur naturally in BC and has the potential to cause environmental, cultural, or economic harm.
Due to invasive plants’ ability to grow quickly and easily, they have the possibility to outpace the growth of native vegetation or farming crops, causing extensive negative impacts, environmentally, socially, and economically.
These management efforts are the first known coordinated treatment of invasive plants for Radium Hot Springs, and should alleviate the infestation and spread of invasive plants in the community.
