The B.C. Wildfire Service said the Pennock Creek wildfire near Wardner is now being held, marking the most significant change in its latest wildfire update for the East Kootenay.
The Pennock Creek fire is estimated at 25 hectares. Two initial attack crews, one responding officer and two helicopters remain assigned to the fire. Airtankers completed their work for the evening but could return if operational objectives require.
Elsewhere, the Matthew Creek wildfire remains estimated at 50 hectares. The wildfire service said the fire is exhibiting Rank 3 and Rank 4 fire behaviour, fuelled by elevated winds, low relative humidity and available fuels. Because the fire is burning in steep, mountainous terrain, crews cannot safely attack it directly. Officials said no structures or infrastructure are currently threatened, and a response strategy is being prepared should the fire move into terrain where crews can work safely.
The Calamity Creek wildfire, south of Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park, is also estimated at 50 hectares.
The Bootleg Mountain wildfire is estimated at 2.1 hectares. The wildfire service said it is displaying Rank 3 and Rank 4 fire behaviour under similar weather conditions. The fire is burning in steep terrain that limits direct suppression efforts, and no structures or infrastructure are currently threatened.
Near Meachen, the Tower Creek No. 3 wildfire is estimated at 0.01 hectares, while Tower Creek No. 2 is estimated at 0.009 hectares. A helicopter is assigned to the cluster of fires and will respond as operational objectives require.
The B.C. Wildfire Service also said the Tower Creek and Meachen Creek wildfires are being held.
Smoke from many of the region’s active wildfires will remain visible.
