City exploring options to support restorative justice

Cranbrook council has directed staff to explore options to start at restorative justice program under the Cranbrook RCMP detachment.

Restorative justice services are currently delivered by the Cranbrook and District Restorative Justice Society, but there services are quite limited and have had difficulty securing funding.

The city will look at options to fund its own program through the Cranbrook RCMP.

City staff are proposing a one-year term part-time position funded through external grant funding.

The restorative justice coordinator position be a municipal employee position in the Police Support Services department.

The idea is to gather data like the number of program referrals and program success rates.

That information would be used evaluate the benefit and cost of a long-term program that could be funded through the city’s budget.

Staff will bring back an option for council’s approval at a future meeting.
