Landfill fire extinguished in Columbia Valley

An overnight fire at the Columbia Valley Landfill has been snuffed out.

The call came in at around 11:30 p.m. and nine firefighters with two pieces of apparatus responded.

“When our firefighters arrived on scene, the fire was burning in a small area within the garbage,” said Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service Deputy Chief Jon Tames.

“We were able to quickly get water on it, and with the assistance of the contractor on site, spread the garbage out to ensure all the hot spots were wet down and the fire was fully extinguished.”

He said they were able to quickly knockback the blaze and there were no injuries.

“Everyone did an excellent job of ensuring the fire was confined to the site of origin and did not spread,” added Tames.

The cause is still under investigation.
