Bowen Byram becomes highest paid NHL defenceman

Cranbrook’s Bowen Byram has signed a contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks and will be $75 million richer.

It’s a six-year deal worth $12.5 million a season, however Byram still has a year left on his previous deal before this contract kicks in.

With this signing, Byram is currently the highest paid defenceman in the NHL.

That could change quickly though as players like Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes could sign extensions this offseason.

Byram has yet to play a game for the Blackhawks, after a blockbuster trade to the organization before the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.

The 25-year-old had a career-high 42 points in 82 games.
