Local MP calls for steel making coal to be named critical mineral

Columbia-Kootenay-Southern Rockies MP Rob Morrison is calling on the federal government to include metallurgical coal as a critical mineral.

“Steel making coal is recognized as a critical mineral in the United States, European Union and India,” he said.

“Canada needs to formally recognize metallurgical coal as a critical mineral as well.”

He said steel making coal will be crucial to Canada’s growth.

“Steel is fundamental to energy infrastructure, transportation networks and national defense,” he said.

“The materials required to produce steel are therefore critical to the economic and industrial security.”

He said the region will help contribute to that.

“In Columbia-Kootenay-Southern-Rockies the communities in the Elk Valley and Trail are helping make that possible,” he said.

“The Elk Valley is home to a highly skilled mining workforce that produces world-class metallurgical coal.”

To be considered a critical mineral in Canada, a mineral must both have a threatened supply chain and have a reasonable chance of the mineral being produced by Canada.
