Sand bag stations at the ready with heavy rain in the forecast

A flood watch is in effect for the East Kootenay and multiple sandbagging stations have been set up.

The forecast is calling for potential rainfall across the region of 40mm to 80mm between Friday and Monday, and between 60mm to 100mm of rainfall in the Elk Valley.

For the Cranbrook area, a self fill station is set up at the public works yard on Cobham Avenue.

In the Columbia Valley, sand bags can be filled behind the old barn at Mountainside Golf Course in Fairmont Hot Springs and at the Windermere Fire Hall parking lot.

Elk Valley locations are at Railway Avenue in Fernie and the Elk River Inn parking lot in Hosmer.

Regional District of East Kootenay officials said it’s important to be proactive when it comes to potential flooding.

It takes two people about one hour to fill and place roughly 100 sandbags, so don’t wait for waters to rise.

Residents are urged to be extremely cautious around all local waterways.
