Flood watch issued for East Kootenay

The River Forecast Centre has issued a flood watch for the East Kootenay region as rivers continue to rise due to accelerated snowmelt this week.

Officials warned that fast-moving water and unstable riverbanks could create hazardous conditions near waterways throughout the region.

Residents and visitors are being urged to stay back from stream edges, avoid walking or playing near rivers and creeks and follow all posted warning signs and advisories.

Officials said even calm-looking water can conceal strong currents capable of knocking a person off their feet in seconds, including in shallow areas.

People heading outdoors are advised to carry a cellphone, tell someone their plans and bring essentials such as appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear and a first-aid kit.

Anyone taking part in water activities such as kayaking or canoeing should ensure they have the proper skills and safety equipment, including a properly fitted personal flotation device.
