Fernie RCMP calls practically the same for Q4

Elk Valley RCMP had 319 calls for service from Fernie between January and March.

That was relatively unchanged from the same time last year, with only one additional call.

Staff Sergeant Sven Nielsen said social media can make it seem like crime is out of control, but the numbers are similar year after year.

“Certainly social media impacts in any situation. Whatever is going on or happening can be elevated and elevate an anxiety within the community,” he said.

“I think the three-year comparable that we have is a good example of showing that things don’t typically happen here.”

The RCMP had 11 calls for assault in the fourth quarter, 12 mischief complaints and 14 impaired investigations among others.
