YXC sees passenger surge and expands services and upgrades

The first quarter of 2026 has seen growth at the Canadian Rockies International Airport (YXC), with more passengers and new investments improving travel, connections and economic activity.

March was the busiest month on record for the airport, with about 16,000 travellers. The increased activity shows strong demand for flights in the region and expanded airline service.

Pacific Coastal Airlines has returned to YXC, offering daily direct flights between Cranbrook and Kelowna. The direct service makes travel for business, health care and tourism easier while connecting residents to destinations across B.C.

To keep up with the recent surge, the airport is upgrading its terminal with more seating and new washrooms to make travel more comfortable, accessible and efficient, and to improve the overall passenger experience.

The airport’s parking lot will also be upgraded to ensure the facility remains convenient and reliable for passengers and visitors. YXC parking areas will be expanded and repaved to improve access and increase capacity.

These improvements will take place while YXC operates on self-sustaining funding, without using municipal tax money.

“It is a privilege to be part of the continued success of YXC. Aviation is a turbulent industry to work in, never more so that over these past few years and I’m thrilled that the continued loyalty and utilization of this key asset has enabled us to smooth out the bumps and continue realizing our potential for the region,” said Tristen Chernove, airport manager for the Canadian Rockies International Airport.

The airport also continues to focus on sustainability, with electric vehicle charging stations available for travellers.

YXC is seeing more private investment, including a sold Bid Air hangar to Decosse Customs and a new one built by Streamline Airways, boosting aviation activity and space for aircraft storage, maintenance and operations.

The airport continues to grow as an important transportation hub and economic driver for the region. The improvements at YXC support travellers today and help plan for future growth.
