Councillor Cardozo named acting mayor in wake of Wilks resignation

Sparwood councillor Amy Cardozo has been named acting mayor following Mayor David Wilks putting in his resignation.

Wilks’ resignation is effective May 1, so the April 21 council meeting was his last.

Cardozo has been a councillor for seven and a half years and said Wilks was always supportive with her being the only woman at the council table.

“He created a safe space for me to learn, grow and build confidence in my role. His leadership, patience, and guidance have helped shape how I approach this role and make decisions, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything he’s poured into myself, our community, and beyond,” she said.

“I have some big shoes to fill and I can only hope that I will have the opportunity to help others grow in this role in the future when I run for Mayor in the fall.”

Cardozo will also represent Sparwood at the Regional District of East Kootenay, Kootenay East Regional Hospital District Board and the Highway 3 Mayor and Chairs Committee.

Councillor Steve Kallies will serve as a replacement if Cardozo is unavailable.

Council elected to not have a by-election since a municipal election is already set for the fall.
