Cranbrook RCMP looking to improve visibility and engagement in 2026

The Cranbrook RCMP is setting its strategic priorities for 2026 following discussions with community managers.

Sergeant Stu Hert said they’ve heard a number of areas they can work on.

“Largely I boil it down to a few key things,” he said.

“We were told that we should be visible in the community, we should be engaged in the community, proactive, strategic and we should be sharing information.”

The City of Cranbrook would also like to see the department continue their work with bylaw.

“Some of the specific pieces of information we got back from city manners is a desire to see us continue to build on our relationships with bylaws and support the work being done by the bylaw department,” he said.

Hert said they will also try to address the perception that Cranbrook is unsafe.

“Work to manage public disorder and manage the things that give the perception of the community being unsafe. I say perception, because I do want to highlight that we are in a very safe community,” he added.

“We are not one that’s filled with rampant crime or victimization but sometimes the perception is such that there is potential for that. Feeling safe is as important as being safe. We want citizens to feel safe in their community.”

The detachment will also have an increased presence around those living rough on the outskirts of town.

“Particularly to mitigate wildfire risk and make sure the activities being engaged in there are not putting the community at large from a wildfire that can take off and spread quite quickly,” Hert said.
