Sparwood makes changes with acting mayor scheduling

Sparwood council has approved a change in the acting mayor position for July to October 2026, to help fill the mayor’s role if they are not available.

“The appointments were originally established at the inaugural meeting of council held in November of 2022. The role of acting mayor is appointed to councillors on a rotating basis throughout the term,” said corporate services manager Megan Rawles.

“The intent is to ensure consistent leadership coverage during any absence of the mayor, with each member assuming the responsibilities for designated periods.”

Councillor Sam Atwal was originally supposed to serve as acting mayor during that time frame, but has moved out of Sparwood.

“Councillor Atwal has relocated outside of the boundaries of the district and is no longer available to serve in the capacity of acting mayor in the period of July 2026 to October of 2026,” Rawles added.

Council decided that councillor Amy Cardozo will serve as acting mayor for that term, since she was next in line.
