Recall of Shaikh Al Kar halva products expands in B.C.

A recall of Shaikh Al Kar products due to possible salmonella contamination has expanded to more types of halva sold in British Columbia.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the recall now covers Shaikh Al Kar-brand Plain Halva, Pistachio Halva, Sugar Free Plain Halva Diet, and Chocolate Halva.

The products were sold in 400g and 800g packages in B.C. and Alberta. The recalled products have best-before dates of Aug. 25, 2026.

Shaikh Al Kar brand Plain Halva in 400g packages was also the subject of a recall issued last month in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The recalled product has a best before date of Feb. 4, 2027.

The CFIA also recalled Shaikh Al Kar tahini earlier this month. It said the product was sold in B.C. 400g and 800g packages with best-before dates of Aug. 12, 2026.

Consumers are advised to throw out the recalled products or return them to the store where they were purchased.

The CFIA warned food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness.

Infections can be particularly serious and sometimes deadly for young children, pregnant people, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
