City of Cranbrook representatives have a busy schedule at this year’s Union of BC Municipalities Convention.
City councillor Lynnette Wray said they have been advocating for more provincial support when it comes to healthcare and homelessness.
“We had two advocacy meetings yesterday and in both of those meetings we really highlighted Cranbrook’s role as a regional service centre, advocating for sufficient resources from the provincial government to fulfill that role,” she said.
She said they are hoping for more youth addiction support somewhere in the area.
“Our first meeting had a particular focus on healthcare and included a representative from the Interior Health Authority,” she added.
“One of the things we highlighted in the meeting was the real need for a residential detox and treatment centre for youth somewhere in the Kootenays. It’s a service that’s really lacking.”
She said they also discussed the success of the Mayor’s taskforce on homelessness program and are asking the province to keep them in mind for any future pilot projects.
The UBCM runs through Friday and the city has more meetings on the schedule.
