KIJHL opening weekend over

The KIJHL is back an action with the first slate of games now complete.

The Kimberley Dynamiters had a strong showing with a 7-0 win over the Nelson Leafs and a closer 4-3 win over the Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

Head coach Derek Stuart said their roster looks dangerous.

“I really like our team right now, we’ve got a good mix of veterans and new guys,” he said.

“The rookies are all pulling their weight and playing well as well. It’s real early but this is probably one of the stronger teams we’ve had.”

The Golden Rockets also won twice beating the Columbia Valley Rockies 5-2 and the Revelstoke grizzlies 3-2 in a shootout.

Head coach Jed Houseman said the changes they’ve made have built a deeper team.

“We keep adding some majorly impactful guys as we go. It’s a much deeper team this year from last year and have some guys with great experience,” he added.

“We have seven 20-year-olds on our team and quite a few 19-year-olds too. We like our goalies, we like our D and we like our forwards.”

The Fernie Ghostriders only had one match over the weekend but they beat the Creston Valley Thunder Cats 4-2.

Head coach Chad Scharff said the roster has been overhauled after last year’s disappointing playoffs.

“We had a really good team last year, but obviously didn’t get the outcome we were looking for in the playoffs,” he said.

“I think this year’s roster is totally different. We have 14-15 new faces in our lineup and a lot more youth. We’ll take a few weeks here to see where everyone places themselves on the depth chart.”

The Columbia Valley Rockies were the losers this weekend falling 5-2 to Golden and 4-3 to Creston.

Head coach Tayler Sincennes said minor mistakes kept piling up, but he likes the look of the team this year.

“The little details of our game were missing in both games at times and that’s what truly cost us,” he said.

“I really like our group. I think we have a really solid core of guys, a good veteran group, sprinkled in with some good rookies that will add a bit of a punch. We just have to do a better job with our small details.”

All teams are back in action this coming weekend.
