Water source drilling underway in Fernie

Crews in Fernie are installing test groundwater wells as the search for a secondary water source continues.

There are increased selenium levels in the James White Wells, which is the city’s current secondary source. Meanwhile, testing has shown no selenium concentrations of concern in the main Fairy Creek water source.

The city tested some areas last year, but they were a no-go.

“We drilled some test wells near the Cedars and the flow in those wells proved inadequate to our needs,” said Mayor Nic Milligan.

“There was also an indication of some magnesium in that water.”

They are now installing test wells near the Fernie Secondary School, along Fairway Dr and near the 2nd Avenue parking lot.

Residents are asked to avoid the project sites until work wraps up at the end of the month.
