A number of prescribed burns will be taking place this week across the East Kootenays.
Prescribed Burn planned for Bull River area
A prescribed burn covering up to seven hectares in the Bull River area of the Southeast Fire Centre, on the Red Barn conservation land about 0.5 kilometres north of Bull River, is expected to take place this week, and could start as early as today, Sept. 15, depending on weather conditions.
The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship in conducting the burn and warn smoke may be visible from Bull River and surrounding areas, and to motorists travelling along Wardner Fort Steele Road and Highway 93.
Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.
Prescribed Burn planned for the Wycliffe area
A prescribed burn covering up to 30 hectares in the Wycliffe area of the Southeast Fire Centre, about 14 kilometres northwest of Cranbrook, is expected to take place this week, and could start as early as today, Sept. 15, depending on weather conditions.
The BC Wildfire Service and say smoke may be visible from Cranbrook and surrounding areas, and to motorists travelling along Highway 95A.
Prescribed Burn planned for the Sanca/Kuskonook area
A prescribed burn covering up to 4.8 hectares in the Sanca area, about 20 kilometres north west of Creston on the east side of Kootenay Lake, is expected to take place this week, and could start as early as today, Sept. 15, depending on weather conditions.
The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting yaqan nuʔkiy (Lower Kootenay Band) the burn, and warn smoke may be visible to recreators on Kootenay Lake, motorists travelling along Highway 3A and from nearby communities including Sanca, Kuskonook and Creston.
Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.
