Kimberley is moving ahead with a new wastewater treatment plant with site preparation expected to begin this fall.
Mayor Don McCormick said the project has been years in the making and is excited to see it get off the ground.
“The first evaluation of the wastewater treatment plant was way back in 2016/17,” he said.
“It’s been quite a while that we’ve been on this journey and we’re finally getting to the point now where we have a design in place and are achieving the goals we had set for the new facility.”
The original project design had escalated from $90.6 million to an estimated $130 million mostly due to inflationary costs.
McCormick says that would have been a non-starter and they worked hard to change the project and lower the cost.
“With a change in design, a change in location and some other modifications including the way we are managing the project we managed to get that cost back down to $90 million.”
The new facility will be built on the site of the existing pollution control centre.
Site preparation could begin this October with construction slated to start in the Spring.
The City is hoping to have the project complete by the fall of 2028.
A public open house is also scheduled for Oct. 15 fo0r residents to learn more about the project.
