The 2025 BC Wakesurf Provincial Championships has wrapped up and local riders were well represented on the podium at the weekend’s event at Lake Koocanusa.
“From seeing a number of brand new riders in their first competitive event, to incredible runs from the top riders in BC, and watching the spirit of camaraderie within the surf community, it was another stellar event,” said Waterski and Wake Sport BC Wake Surf Committee member Loree Duczek.
The weather wasn’t the nicest, but that didn’t stop the competition.
“In spite of the cloudy, rainy weather we also had a number of people lining the course on shore and several boats cheering riders on from the water, which was so great to see,” Duczek added.
Thirty-four athletes competed in multiple divisions, with three locals making the podium in the Pro Women’s event.
Fernie’s Caroline Villeneuve took first place, followed by Koocanusa-based surfer Emily Agate and Cranbrook’s Randall Savarie.
It was a battle of the brothers in the Pro Men’s competition with Ryder and Dagen Duczek placing first and second.
Ryder just snuck past Dagen to take first place by 0.5 of a point.
At the age of six, Cranbrook’s Hudson Tily and Kimberley’s Colten Gauertook home second and third respectively in the Junior Boys 2 Division.
Fernie’s Olivia Sombrowski took home the provincial championship in the Amateur Female event, while Cranbrook’s Lauren Jensen finished third.
In Amateur Mens’ 1, Fernie’s Oliver Pogubila took his first Provincial Championship, edging past Jack Mailloux of Baynes Lake who took second.
The Canadian Wakesurf and Foiling Nationals is also coming to Lake Koocanusa.
The event will be held Sept. 6-7
