Special Air Quality Statement issued for Elk Valley

A special Air Quality Statement has been issued for the Elk Valley as Environment Canada anticipates the area to be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours.

Smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility which poses increased health risks.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) recommends limiting time outdoors, including reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

“You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.” said the RDEK.
