South Country firefighters extinguish fire at old Galloway Mill site

Firefighters with the South Country Fire Department put out a blaze at the former Galloway Mill.

The fire was sparked on Tuesday evening with the call coming in at around 7 p.m.

“The fire was confined to a log pile and we took immediate action to suppress it and fully wet it down,” said Elk Valley and South Country Rural Fire Deputy Chief Ben Goertzen.

“There was no risk of spread and our team did an excellent job of quickly extinguishing the fire.”

Fourteen members from the Elko, Jaffray and Baynes Lake Fire Departments responded with 6 pieces of apparatus and were assisted by an excavator and water truck.

No injuries were reported an the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Crews were on the scene for about three hours to ensure there were no more hot spots.
